The flowchart we shouldn’t need but desperately do.

oh god i wish i had this chart for the man the other day who “explained” my own master’s degree to me and told me that Morgan Freeman was a famous black actor

I’m gonna be completely honest here, and I’m probably gonna get shanked for this… but I hate the concept of mansplaining, mainly because… well, I’m a man and I like to explain things. But it’s not about sexism, I just like the sound of my own voice and I love teaching people about something and seeing the cogs in their heads turning as they realize “I never knew that!”.

Maybe I should become a teacher?

There is nothing wrong explaining things or teaching others when asked to do so! 🙂

What is wrong is being a know it all about a topic you personally don’t know much about to a person who does.

Like the other day, my BA and MA are in globalization and Development. After I told this man what I studied, he “explained” it to me instead as if I did not specialize in it. He did not let me talk about my own knowledge or even ask me questions. He just. Wrongfully explained globalization to me. His own knowledge was in a completely different field as well. So yeah. That was annoying and very rude of him.

Yesterday I asked my Korean supervisor a thing about Korean language because I was curious and he went on this really interesting tangent about Korean linguistics. This was fine because I solicited this conversation.

So, yes. Please continue to teach others, but don’t assume people don’t know things. You can always phrase your teaching moment into a question first such as “did you know abc does xyz?” And depending on the response, continue from there!

Because let’s face it, everyone loves to learn, but no one likes being talked down to.
